Starting May 1, 2026, 99designs by Vista will add VAT to invoices where applicable. VAT (Value Added Tax) is a tax collected in certain countries on goods and services. Whether it applies to your 99designs earnings depends entirely on where you're based.
For most designers, VAT doesn't apply and there's nothing you need to do. If you're based in the European Union (EU), you’ll need to update your 99designs account settings to ensure your invoices are processed correctly. More info below.
🇺🇸 US-Based Designers
Hyperwallet will provide any necessary tax documents for your earnings. No VAT information is required from you.
🌍 Designers Outside the EU
VAT does not apply to your earnings. You don't need to provide any VAT information. If your home country has issued you a local VAT or tax number and you'd like to include it on your invoices, you can add it in your account settings.
🇪🇺 EU-Based Designers
If you're based in the EU, VAT may apply to your earnings from certain projects and contests. Here's what you need to know based on your location.
🇩🇪 Germany
If you are not registered as a business in Germany, you will be treated as a small business, and 0% VAT will apply. If you are registered as a business, a 19% VAT will be added to your project and contest invoices in addition to your earnings.
To ensure your invoices are issued correctly, you'll need to provide either:
- Your German VAT ID number, or
- A Cross-Border SME Scheme ID — a special ID issued by your home tax office for eligible small businesses. If you're unsure whether you qualify, check with your local tax authority or a tax advisor.
Your ID will appear on your invoices, as required by EU law.
🇪🇺 EU Countries (outside Germany)
If you are registered as a business, 0% VAT will be applied to your project and contest invoices in addition to your earnings. To ensure this rate is applied, please provide your VAT ID.
If you are not registered as a business, you will be treated as a small business, and 0% VAT will also apply.
To ensure your invoices are issued correctly, you'll need to provide either:
- Your VAT ID number from your home country, or
- A Cross-Border SME Scheme ID — a special ID issued by your home tax office for eligible small businesses. If you're unsure whether you qualify, check with your local tax authority or a tax advisor.
Your ID will appear on your invoices, as required by EU law.
