How should I declare the use of generative AI in contest entries?

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence technology that produces an output such as text or an image in response to user instructions (prompts) based on the datasets it is trained with. On 99designs, generative AI tools can be used in certain circumstances and categories, and when a client has opted in and given their permission for designers to use these tools.

We treat AI-generated content as third party material and as such, it is not allowed in logo, illustration or button and icon design contests. For all other contests, clients will decide if they want to allow the use of AI generated tools in their contest.

The declaration process in contests

In contests where AI is allowed, you will be asked to declare whether or not you have used any generative AI tools in your design when you submit it.

In contest categories where AI is not allowed you will see a notification to this effect warning that AI is not permitted.

NOTE: In contests where the client has allowed use of stock but not AI, you may not use stock images that contain AI generated content.

If you declare that the design does use generative AI, you will then be prompted to take the following steps:

  • List any and all AI tools you used to create the design (e.g. Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, etc.).
  • Provide a short description to help the client understand how and where you used AI in the design
  • Confirm you have read and understood the terms and conditions of the generative AI tool(s) you have used, and that you can legally transfer ownership of the design to the client

Once you have declared all elements, you confirm that you have read and understood the client’s brief and that you agree to 99designs’ code of conduct and then hit submit.

As there is no declaration tool in 1-to-1 Projects, we ask you to provide any links and all relevant information about AI-generated materials you are using in the "Activity" tab, and ensure that clients give their written permission for you to use AI tools. You can find more info here.
