Can I use public domain symbols in my designs?

Public domain works can be used in designs, but those works can’t be copyrighted or trademarked without significant modification or incorporation into a much broader design.

When a designer uses a public domain symbol, they must implement the concept in their own way. For example, the caduceus, Escher’s trefoil knot and Penrose triangle are all public domain symbols that have been recreated in countless ways throughout the years.
